Does it make me a huge nerd if I think everything about Solidworks is really f@#%ing cool?

UPDATE // 05.10.2012

I’m spending this week at home in Rock Hill, SC. There’s not much to do here for a culturious* collegiate like myself, so I’ve been sitting around the house twiddling my thumbs for most of my visit.

However, there is one thing I really want to check out while I’m in town. The Giordana Velodrome, opened by the City in March, is one of the only outdoor bicycle tracks in the Southeast. In addition to hosting professional racing, the facility offers recreational opportunities, but only after completing a training course. There’s a race tomorrow night that I might attend, and I definitely want to take a spin around the track at some point.

Don’t get the wrong idea, though. My parents have managed to save plenty of chores for me this week, too. I’ve got to pull weeds and mow the lawn, and run the trash to the dump, and wash the cars and change their oil, and so on. Oh, I’ve got to squeeze in a visit to the doctor and the dentist, too. First world problems, am I right?!

Although I’ve always managed to get by okay, I’m not always the best at prioritizing my tasks. Right now I’m using this minimalistic web app called Teux Deux to help manage things. Unlike the ultra-customizable tasks feature on Google Calendar, Teux Deux is bare bones—no categories or due dates, just a list. Teux Deux also has an iPhone app, which would really come in handy if I had an iPhone.

*culturious: shallow concept combining “culture” + “curious.” A requirement of Clemson freshmen is to create a project demonstrating “culturiosity.”

Coming next week:
—New blog featuring music/movies/books/culture or whatever. Don’t put me in a cage!

—Thoughts on the Hunger Games series, which I’m reading this week.

—Reflections on my first few weeks as General Manager of WSBF.

Adam Yauch died today. I can’t say that I knew much about him, but I do know that I like the Beastie Boys. I hope that MCA’s death brings attention to the causes to which he dedicated his life.

It may seem trivial, but the tweets at the bottom of this article are what drums up emotions for me.

RIP MCA

Just 8 minutes away from the PKGSC 102 final exam. Pretty excited for the prospect of creative outlets now that I’m finished with introductory courses.

I had the pleasure of playing bass for the Filth Fuxers at Beards for Breasts III. The men of the Upstate and Classy Beard and Moustache Society really know how to throw down for charity. Check out this preview by the wonderful Karen Greene:

This is their third year doing this event which helps the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a cause close to my heart (pun intended!). Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer in deaths caused by cancer. This means that about 40,000 women and 450 men die each year because of breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is there to fight cancer because let’s face it : Cancer Sucks! And why not help get rid of it by doing something fun!? So come out and support your bearded brethren for a weekend of adventure and charity.

Take a listen to an early version of one of my favorite Fuxers tracks above.

I wrote a preview for a show in Greenville last Thursday. I wasn’t able to take pictures, but I’m hoping to write a show journal sometime this week.

UPDATE // 04.30.2012

About a week ago, I was elected to the position of General Manager of WSBF FM Clemson. I’ll take charge of “the Upstate’s Only True Alternative Radio” beginning in August.

Although our primary objective is to provide quality radio, WSBF is also a home for the curious at a university where the status quo is rarely questioned. My goal is to reinforce the importance of defining “alternative” as we add DJs with knowledge across the musical and academic spectra.

What will preserve WSBF as an institution for future generations is its ability to adapt to its membership. As interns become DJs and DJs become alumni, the atmosphere changes with their tastes. My challenge will be to let this happen on its own.

WSBF means more to me than any other organization I’ve ever joined. I am genuinely honored that this group of people would trust me to lead them.

Stay tuned for more news as I learn the ropes this summer.

Most of all, though, we need new musical forms. We need a form that doesn’t think of itself as a collection of influences. We need musicians who know that music can take inspiration not only from other music but from the whole experience of life.

Daniel McCord, a former Clemson student and WSBF DJ, filmed this show at the Radio Room in Greenville. Of the same show, I took pictures and wrote a review for SceneSC, which you can find here.
